Recalls Toys Make Old-Fashioned the New Thing lyrics
By Alison Marek & Julie L. Jones
December 2007
If you have not stocked wooden toys, you may miss! Spooked by China retreats, holiday shoppers are attacking shops of wooden toys, especially the fact Stateside. TD said monthly Manufacturers who are struggling to meet demand and continue to anticipate that the fervor in 2008 … and beyond.
Long Range A TREND
"The toy industry wants to sound like [the reaction to the recalls] no big deal … and people are buying back as usual, but it is not happening, "said Michael Rainville, co-owner of Maple reference Woodcraft Co.
"Once people start to get better quality these toys, which is what they want," he predicted Marilyn Chalais, U.S. agent for Holztiger.
Unprecedented growth
Orders unbridled wooden toys after recalls were reported by nine of the 12 manufacturers of wooden toys, who spoke to TD Monthly, two others said their sales in 4Q are substantially better than last year but not sure of the Retreats are directly responsible.
So what constitutes a "crazy"?
"300 percent" growth, said that both Michael Whitworth, founder of Whittle Toy Company, and founder / Designer Jason Golden of Camden Rose.
"1000-fold from two years ago, was the response from Joe Barrett, Automoblox CEO.
"We have not even opened all new accounts since October, because that's all we can do to keep with our existing business, "continued Rainville.
Owner Ron Voake 35 years old Vermont Wooden Toys TD said monthly demand has been so high this fall was not even the opportunity to send customers who typically buy each year. "We have left only one toy," said.
HaPe opened 250 new retail accounts in three weeks this fall and probably will double revenues last year, said Director-General Maggie Qui. Whittle Toy Company from 73 affiliated stores this spring more than 400 of December 6, monthly TD Whitworth said.
The good guys are WIN
New consumer focus on quality of toys fit in with their concerns about the environmental impact of the industry. "Everything [we do] is grown from sustainable, locally grown hardwoods," said
Royce Bjornstad, owner of Mossy Creek Carpinteria wood. "We do not paint or varnish – just use a finish of food-grade mineral oil."
The hardwood products in Camden Rose are not just local, that are personal: "Not only did the car know that Zoom Child, but I can also tell you the particular tree," insisted gold. He added that the company never fodder in polluted environments, because I have no idea what [the tree] absorbed in his life. "
A abundant CHRISTMAS
Retailers are benefiting from the new priorities of consumers, too. "The biggest thing we're doing is Kapla" Masconcup said Eric, owner of Geppetto's Toy Box in Oak Park, Illinois has a screen of 3,500 made in Europe Kapla wooden planks in the window, plus another 4,000 in store for the game. Masoncup also said he is out of stock of wood of Fagus trucks that imports from Germany.
Founder Caroline Deal of the online retailer Sum-Bo-Shine has not seen the difference in sales, but 85 percent of his buyers this year are new customers, and many are Estia toys after Wood, also of Germany.
Double-edged wooden sword
But as much as the wooden toy manufacturers have benefited from the massive reaction market, some are feeling the whip, too.
Automoblox can not meet the 75 percent of their holiday orders explosive due to increased restrictions on Chinese exports. "Our toys passed all inspections, but now they have to be a further inspection by [Chinese] government inspectors," said CEO Joe Barrett TD monthly.
However, no one in the specialty – including Barrett – now complains. "Things could not be better, "summed Whitworth.
