Needing new ideas for gifts at Xmas from grandparents that are refreshing?

Christmas is fast approaching an I am in need of ideas an suggestion on different ways to gift give between my parents and my two children (ages 7&3 both girls). They have so many toys, games, outdoor toys (bikes, toboggans, garden toys), clothes, DVDs, and books etc-etc. What do other grandparents buy for their Grandkids, and what do other parents like that their kids get. I need some suggestions please & thank you for your help.

I guess another question that goes together with this is what to buy for the Grandparent that has everything too! We do magazine subscriptions for them (and they do them for the Grandkids too – and my girls love that), give photos of the family – things like that, but seem to be running out of ideas – so please don’t hesitate to make some suggestions if you have some!

My parents have 13 grandchildren. My oldest daughter, now 30, is their first. On her first Christmas they bought her a Christmas tree ornament and continued the tradition the next Christmas, too. Years went by and new grandchildren joined the family. Each year the highlight for all the grandchildren is what Christmas tree ornament did Grandma and Grandpa get them this year? About 10 years ago, my parents talked with each of the grandchildren and explained that they were going to be on a tighter budget now that they were both retired. In years past, every grandchild received an outfit, a book, a game or toy, and a Christmas tree ornament. My parents said they had to pick which 2 they wanted as they couldn’t do all 4 gifts anymore. Every single grandchild told my parents that they really (really, really) wanted the ornament, but didn’t care what the other gift was. As each grandchild grows up and moves to their own place, they take a collection of their own Christmas tree ornaments with them. I always write on the box the year they received it and any special memories attached to it. My parents are now having great-grandchildren and each one also receives a specially picked ornament. Every year our church does an “Angel Tree” sponsored by the Salvation Army. Hanging on the tree are paper angels with the age and gender along with a list of suggested gifts for a child in need. My parents like to pick a few angels, take the grandkids shopping and out to eat. They have fun with grandma and grandpa plus learn about compassion at the same time. A win-win for all. I think making a family tradition is a gift that lasts a life-time. I know a couple who take their grandchildren every year to see the Nutcracker.
