Why is my VCR/DVD combo not working, after having a toy jammed in the tape deck?

My 1 year old jammed a couple plastic toys & a cookie into the VCR slot. I did not realize this until recently, when it suddenly would not power on, even though plugged in the outlet. I took the top off, and used long-nose pliers to remove the small objects out of the tape deck. However, now after plugging it up – nothing. It won’t power up at all. Any suggestions?
