HELP! How long does it take for a new cat to be more comfortable in new surroundings?!?

Almost 2 weeks, I have a cat 2 years old of a female coworker. Since I got the cat that seems to be close to someone in my house or my other cat 9 months old. She cries at night and hides in the kitchen cupboards during the day. She only comes at night when everyone is asleep. I know she has to get use to their new environment, but there anything I can do to accelerate this process? I have extended their old toys in the house and gives the food you normally eat. It just seems like she does not want to be with us. It is very scary! When I try to get her out of the box, screams and runs back in. is there anything I can do to comfort and assist their transition to their new home?

The Most of the time it takes a couple of weeks, but varies from one cat to another, due to personality differences. Did the person you got it to have her kittenhood? Was it real close to her previous owner? These things can be factors. My guess is that crying at night is she looking for her former owner. Basically mourns for the loss. It sounds to me like that is terribly affected by the change and just needs more time. Be patient with her, let her decide that you are worth.
