Isn’t it then logical that if anyone has ever chosen to name a human child (or for that matter, is in fact a human being named) Muhammad, they should also all be shot – as it is surely an insult to a God for such a fallible and flawed creature as any human to be called by His Name? This seems to be the natural extrapolation of the ‘reasoning’ given by those interviewed over this matter.

For Muslims who say it is blasphemy to create any image of The Prophet…. the teddy bear was made as a child’s toy and called… a teddy bear! It was not created as an image to be worshipped. Giving it a classroom name did not turn it into an image. If it had been named either of the alternative names being considered, Abdullah or Hassan, would that have turned the lump of cloth into an image of Abdullah, or Hassan? Of course not! The children were not being asked to bow down before this now-named toy, or to pray to it!

For as long as baby boys continue to be named Mohammed without that making them objects of worship, the same principle must apply to any object so named. Worship is a conscious act of devotion. It does not automatically happen the second you name a person or an object the same as your revered prophet. Of course, if you call anyone or anything ‘God’ that is a different matter. There is only One God. On this Christians and Muslims agree. But Christians wonder whether the Muslim prophet is SO revered that he is actually being worshipped. This rumpus shows inordinate sensitivity to an adored human. Perhaps it’s time Muslims revisited the subject of polytheism to check if they have not elevated their prophet to demi-god status.
