Do you have to have a non-profit status to accept/ask ppl for money….?

My friend and I would like to do something like a non-profit organization, only we can’t afford to set up a whole system and pay to become a non-profit organization. All we would like to do is set up a website where people can donate money and maybe post some fliers or go to local businesses, etc, and then using that money buy stuffed animals, toys, etc, for kids in hospitals.
So do we really need to set up a whole non-profit organization just to do this?

501c3 qualifies a non profit to enjoy tax-exempt status .
You will have shell down a considerable amount as tax if the organization does not have this status !!
