Made In Europe Toys

How could you say that in other way?
I don’t understand clearly some expressions such as “an important group” and “on a variety of supports” in the following sentence:
Through an important group of toys, pieces of furniture, books and works of art on a variety of supports, most of them made by artists from over Europe, the exhibition will aim to emphasise the cultural influence of the new, progressive educational methods during the first half of the 20th century.
What did the author mean by these expressions?
Thanks in advance!
It’s long and convoluted. Maybe it’s easiest to break this down into the underlying elements, in a transformational-grammar style of analysis.
There was a movement of new, progressive educational methods in 1900-1950.
These methods had a cultural influence on arts, crafts and literature.
A review of the arts, crafts and literature will reveal that there is an important group of items particularly influenced by these methods.
The exhibition will aim to illuminate the effect and influence of these methods by presenting items from that group.
Now, put all of that into one sentence, and what comes out may resemble the statement you’re trying to understand.
Whether the cultural influence was limited to Europe, or whether it’s just European arts and crafts that are presented in the exhibition, is not clear.
“Works of art on a variety of supports” really seems obscure. It might mean different artistic media, such as prints, sketches, watercolors, oils, sculpture, etc. If so, why not just say so?. It could be painting on a variety of physical supporting material, such as canvas, wall murals, cardboard, masonite, etc., but that seems odd in this context. It might means financial support, such as commissions, public words projects, patrons, or starving artists selling at art fairs and on the street, but that seems to be a stretch too. Despite a variety of possible ideas, I really don’t know exactly what that means.
Added: I just read Joanne’s suggestion that “supports” refers to how the works are displayed. That idea has a lot of merit, and arguably makes more sense than my suggestions. Is this an important enough piece of information to include in this description of the exhibition? Maybe, but seems like a minor detail. It that’s what’s intended, the writing is particularly bad, since the syntax suggests that the “variety of supports” were “made by artists from all over Europe.”
I think “important group” applies to the whole list of items, not just the toys, BTW.
