Global Toys

A test called the Lemelson-MIT Invention Index, which measures Americans' attitudes toward invention and innovation. In their latest study, which found that young Americans have a great need for more project-based learning in their schools. Teenagers believe they really can invent solutions some of the worlds most pressing challenges. The problem is that many of them say they feel unprepared for careers in technology and engineering.
Nearly 72 percent of teens believe that innovations can solve things like global warming, water pollution and depletion of fossil fuels. The 64 percent of teens said they are confident they can invent some of these very innovations compared with only 38 percent of adults who feel they could make something of it.
What I found interesting are the ethnic groups among adolescents, three fourths of them were teenagers in Asia (73 per percent) and Hispanic teens (75 percent) believe they are the ones who could invent something to protect and restore the environment. Moreover, two thirds of Africa and American teens (61 percent), and 64 percent of white teens and 64 percent of adolescent girls share the same belief.
When we read the news about politics is that many teenagers are participating and supporting candidates who are behind environmental issues as global warming, water and air pollution, etc.
However, the problem with the above inventions and beliefs is that the vast majority of adolescents (79 percent) believe there is much value in the hands of the projects in classes such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students want to get their hands dirty and invent, and they want more funding for these types of programs. They say that hands on learning are the same as playing in sports. Many adults do not feel that there are candidates who represent the same belief that students need more funds for this school.
We owe our students to prepare them for modern society and the future ahead and should and must begin to provide the tools and let them practice and learn using now.
What is happening in your school? How many hands on learning much get to do in high school and what subjects?
