Fishing Toys
How do I get my kitten to play and does anyone have any training tips?
I found a 10-12 month old kitten roaming the streets and took him in. I think he’s lived on the streets most, if not all, of his life because Alex doesn’t know what toys are or even how to play. I’ve tried the “going fishing” toy and balls with bells and even fluffy balls but he’ll just walk by or look at me funny as if to say “what are you doing?”
Is there any way I can get him to start playing?
Also I’m trying to train him from jumping on the table when the family eats. I spray him with some water, it works but when I’m gone my roommate doesn’t like to use the spray bottle because she thinks its cruel. Are there any other methods she can use so his training doesn’t go to waste?
I’ve also tried an empty pop can with some pennys taped inside and shake that, it only worked once. I’ve also been trying time outs where he gets put in the bathroom for a few mintues but he never learns his lesson from that.
Any tips?
Thanks.
a few ideas…use an orange scented cleaner on the table…and instead of punishing him for jumping on the table why not redirect him to his own area (most cats have a window perch or a kitty tower that is theirs to play on instead of the table-does yours have one yet? it would really help during training if he did) what we do for my cat is take him off whatever he isn’t supposed to be on and move him to his kitty tower and once he seems content to be on the tower we praise him with petting and treats for being on the tower…he gets no positive attention when he is on the table-just picked up and moved…now he rarely jumps on the table (every couple of weeks it still happens-when theres something on the table he likes like a plastic bag or the hamsters) as far as toys go have you used catnip to entertain him? or better yet have you tried to inspire the feeling of a hunt to him? cats LOVE when you hide their toys and treats around for them to find…and there are special toys to inspire the hunter in a kitten: here’s a link to some interactive cat toys…sprinkle some cat nip on them and hide them behind couches and under chairs and all around the house for your cat to find!

also…since your cat was once an outdoor kitty have you considered leash training him so that he can still enjoy the great outdoors while on walks or at the park? my kitten was leash trained using a clicker and treat method…we had sessions three times a day for five or ten minutes each session and within two months he was walking on his leash better than our dog-he goes to the park everyday and loves it! (other than that he’s an indoor kitty)
