What are the reasons behind the U.S. being behind the curve with hip/high-tech electronics?

We are the richest country in the world, but yet we “always” seems to be behind in terms of getting cool gadgets and the like. For example, a cool new touch screen Prada phone (to rival the IPhone) is set to hit the UK soon (it might already be there) and they have no plans to bring it to the US. There are countless example of situations where we miss out on cool tech toys. Why is this?

I’m not sure if there is a single answer, but one of the reasons may simply be our culture embraces technology differently. For example, the Japanese love technology and many times they are the first market in the world to “test market” a new product as they are more willing to try a new gadget. Didn’t the PS3 premiere there? (Of course the PS3 will do well just about everywhere, but they still get it first)

The companies developing these technologies also may not have enough capital to go fully global. They may have to focus in their local region.
