Clothes Designing Toys
Which Sewing Machine is the best to use?
My friend’s little sister, aged 11, wants to get a sewing machine. Not the TOY kinds. She wants those that can make designs, and is easy to use. She doesnt want the ones that only FIX things, and but like design yher own clothes and etc. I want to get her a affordable one like under 200 dollars. Which do you suggest that I should buy? Some people say SINGER is bad? But I want the ones that easy, nice to use, and can make ALOT of designs.
only the electronic kind please or mechanic. Mostly electronic. Thanks.

My minimal criteria for a beginner’s sewing machine are:
1) adjustable presser foot pressure
2) very good straight stitch
3) good zigzag
4) some method of making buttonholes that doesn’t frustrate the user (4 step usually works well for most, and is an inexpensive technology)
5) adjustable stitch length and width (not found on some of the cheaper machines)
Nice, but not necessary:
–double needle capability (bobbin case in front of the presser foot, not to the side) (useful for decorative effects and hemming knits)
– blindhem stitch (and maybe stretch blindhem)
– a couple or three of the more useful decorative stitches, like a pinstitch or featherstitch or one of the hemstitch stitches.
Does she have someone to teach her basic sewing skills, or will there be someone to troubleshoot when something goes wrong, or will she need to rely on the dealer?
At $200, I’d send you to look for a good used machine from the best dealers locally. That will probably give her the most for the money, and probably the most reliable machine. If she must buy new, and there is no local dealer, I’d probably be looking at some of the basic Janomes (which are also sold under the Kenmore brand name). With Sears, you get no real support, but at least you can return the machine if it doesn’t work well. If the price range can be bumped up to $300, I’d suggest looking at the Janome MX3123 — here are the specs from an internet dealer’s website:

The things I think would be most useful to a beginner are the auto needle up/down, the very easy buttonhole, twin needle capability, a non-jamming bobbin case, and the speed switch.
Theres’ certainly more than enough capability in the machine to “grow on” for many years. Janome is a good, though not top-of-the-heap maker with a good reputation.
Singer went through a real bad patch starting in the 1970s. I’ve heard reports that the new machines are better, but I’ve not tested them myself.
I’d also suggest checking the machine reviews at patternreview.com for comments from machine owners of various models. They’re usually pretty unvarnished, with no axes being ground.
Me, I sew on a midline Viking electronic that I like very much. Not many bells and whistles, but a solid machine that just plain sews well. Big change from the childhood machine (my mom’s) that wasn’t built well, or the cheapie discount house machine that wore out in less than 18 months.
