The bags are packed and you are ready to go. The smell of an exciting trip is in the air. The best rooms have been booked and you are just about to have the vacation of your dreams!! And the best part is; now even your little bundle of love is there. Your precious child who is probably going for his or her first vacation!

Holidaying with children – an all family affair is a great idea but it requires some careful planning and preparation to ensure complete enjoyment for you and your kid! Children have that ebullience in them which makes them oh-so-excited at the prospect of a journey. Be it the onset, or the end of your trip, you can always count on kids to have truckloads of energy and enthusiasm! They want to get out, touch, feel and experience just about anything and everything and this can become a little hard for you as a parent. You don’t feel like scolding or getting angry at them especially when you have promised them good time away from home and books. In your heart you know this is the time for them to let go of their inhibitions and play. But you have the urge to keep your kids in control, so that they don’t become a hindrance in your enjoyment and that of the co-travelers.

The key to this is, keep your children engrossed throughout. There is so much they can do to keep their minds and hands busy!

While traveling in your car, the best option is to engage the children in crafting. Let the kids know the different projects they can work on and then let them be on their own. You can use serving trays to provide a platform for playing dough and puzzles.

Story books are a good bet, if they are of an age to read on their own. You can even play children’s tape for them as you talk freely with your spouse.

Buy a couple of attractive and colorful toys, not the expensive ones. These can be offered as incentives every hour if they behave properly and don’t fight with each other. Children like colors and unwrapping gifts. They like excitement, so give them a surprise every half an hour. This will keep them amused and entertained. And guess what; you might even get some time to get a power nap.

When on a flight, give your child reusable stickers. These can keep the young ones absorbed. Another useful tip is to give them lollipops, they work wonders for earaches during flying. You also need to keep a hand sanitizer handy. Then there is no need to look for a restroom every time the children mess up their hands. These are convenient and it also saves a lot of time.

Also keep a change of clothes handy. Small children feel excited wearing a new set of clothes. Also you must be ready for all contingencies, there are chances that they spill over food and drinks over them.

One great idea is to get your kids an inexpensive camera, if appropriate for their age. This keeps the children inquisitive throughout and also they learn how to be more creative and receptive. Later they can be asked to create scrapbooks or memory books.

This can be useful for you too. You can see the whole holiday through the perspective of a child. The comments children write in the scrapbook can be very insightful and thought provoking. And in later years, as you take trips down memory lane, coming across such memorabilia will bring a smile on your lips! As children grow, involve them in your conversations. It’s amazing what you can learn from the mind of a young one…
