Artists Toys
Are there any artists interested in economic issues and how do they manifest their interest in art?
I am interested in art that makes reference to economic context or to particular subject related to the economy: artists who take a stand with regards to economic issues; types of artworks refering to these issues; artists that use the model of the corporation to create art.
An example is the Swiss group e-toy.corporation
Well yes, I can think of plenty of artists who take on board the economic context and allude to it in their work.
Take for instance Andy Warhol and Pop Art in the 60ies, which clearly embarks the economic environment of the US at that time: mass consumption, mass media, popular culture, etc., represented in Warhol’s work by the means of repetitions of banal objects – the famous spinach can for instance, or popular icons – Marylin Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, taken from everyday life and repeated endlessly across the canvas. The effect to the viewer is that of affordability, availability and increased purchase power, mirroring lines of goods displayed on supermarket shelves or factories’ assembly lines.
